Tiling Is Mostly What Happens Before the Tiles
Tiles are unforgiving. They are flat, rigid and rectangular, and they will show up every bump in the wall behind them and every bit of movement in the floor beneath them. A wall that looked fine under wallpaper can look terrible under large format tiles.
So most of the work on a good tiling job happens before a single tile goes up: getting the surface flat, making sure it is suitable and stable, tanking the wet areas, and setting out where the cuts will land. The tiling itself is the quick part.

It Is All About Where the Cuts Land
This is what separates tiling that looks professional from tiling that just looks finished. Start in the wrong place and you end up with a sliver of tile in the most visible corner, cuts that do not line up between wall and floor, and a row above the bath that draws the eye for all the wrong reasons.
Setting out means working out the layout first — centring where it matters, putting the awkward cuts where nobody looks, keeping grout lines running through from one surface to the next, and making sure a full tile lands where the eye goes. It takes an hour at the start and it is the difference you notice for years.

Three Things That Decide If Tiling Lasts
Tiles rarely fail because of the tiles.
What Is Behind Them
Wet areas need suitable boards and tanking, not standard plasterboard and hope. Fresh plaster needs to be dry and primed. Get the background wrong and the tiles come away with it, however good the tiling was.
Floors That Flex
Timber floors move, and rigid tiles do not. A bouncy floor needs strengthening or over-boarding first, with flexible adhesive and grout — otherwise the cracks appear along the grout lines within a year.
Silicone, Not Grout
Internal corners, and where tiles meet a bath, tray or worktop, need flexible sealant rather than grout. Grout in those junctions cracks as things settle and move, and that crack is how water gets behind the tiles.

Tiling FAQs
The questions we get asked most before tiling starts.
Can you tile over existing tiles?
Sometimes, if the existing tiles are sound, well stuck and flat. But it adds thickness, which affects how the tiles meet door frames, window reveals and worktops, and if anything underneath is loose the new tiles come off with the old. On floors it also raises the level, which matters at doorways. We will tap them and tell you whether it is worth the risk.
Do you supply the tiles?
Most customers choose and buy their own so they get exactly the look they want, and we will advise on quantities — always order more than the exact area, because breakages, cuts and future repairs all need spares from the same batch. Tile shades vary between batches, so buying more later rarely matches.
Can you tile a wooden floor?
Yes, with the right preparation. Timber floors flex and tiles do not, so the floor usually needs strengthening or over-boarding first, and flexible adhesive and grout are used. Tiling straight onto springy floorboards is one of the most common reasons tiled floors crack.
What grout colour should I choose?
It changes the look more than people expect. A contrasting grout makes every tile and every line stand out — great with metro tiles, unforgiving of anything not perfectly straight. A matching grout makes the wall read as one surface. Darker grout on floors stays looking clean far longer than white does.
Can you just regrout instead of retiling?
Often, and it is worth asking. Raking out tired grout, regrouting and renewing the sealant transforms a bathroom that looks past it, for a fraction of a retile. If the tiles themselves are sound and you do not hate the colour, that is usually the better spend.
