A Wall Is Only as Good as Its Frame
Everything you will ever notice about a stud wall is decided before a single board goes on. If the frame is not plumb, the door will not sit right. If the head plate is not fixed into joists, the wall will move and the skim will crack along the ceiling line.
So the frame gets set out properly: fixed into solid timber top and bottom, studs at correct centres, noggins added where boards meet and wherever something heavy is going to hang, and door openings framed square rather than roughly.

Three Choices That Change the Wall
All of them are easy now and expensive to change once the boards are on.
Warmth and Sound
An empty stud wall passes sound freely. Insulation in the void plus a denser board makes a real difference between bedrooms or against a home office, and it costs very little at this stage.
Sockets, Switches, Pipes
Where the sockets, switches, lights and any pipework go needs deciding before boarding. Adding them afterwards means cutting a finished wall back open.
What Hangs On It
TVs, radiators, wall units, basins and handrails all need solid timber behind the board. Tell us where they are going and the noggins go in while the frame is open.
Splitting a Room Is Not Always Just a Wall
Putting up a partition rarely needs planning permission. Building regulations are a different question — dividing a room can affect natural light, ventilation, escape routes and, if you are creating a bedroom, whether the new space is actually habitable. A room with no window is a storage space, not a bedroom, whatever the estate agent later calls it.
We will flag anything that looks like it needs building control involvement before we start rather than after. And if the wall you want gone is holding something up, that is a structural alteration — a different job with beams and calculations, not a stud wall in reverse.

The questions we get asked most about dividing rooms.
Do I need permission to split a room?
Planning permission is rarely needed for an internal partition. Building regulations can still apply, particularly around light, ventilation, fire safety and escape, and especially if you are creating a bedroom or a bathroom. It is worth a quick call to building control at your council, and we will tell you if we think your job is one of those.
Will the new room still have a window?
That is the question to answer before anything else. Splitting a room with one window leaves the far side with no natural light or ventilation, which stops it being a habitable room. Sometimes the answer is repositioning the wall, sometimes it is glazing or borrowed light, and occasionally it is that the split does not work.
Can you fit a door in the new wall?
Yes. The opening is framed as part of the studwork and the door hung, trimmed and adjusted once everything is boarded, with linings and architraves fitted to match the rest of the house where possible.
How thick is a stud wall?
Typically around four to five inches finished, depending on the timber used and the board thickness — considerably slimmer than a masonry wall, which is part of why they suit dividing rooms where every inch counts.
How long does a partition take?
The frame and boarding is often a day or two for a straightforward wall. Skimming, drying time and decorating come after that, so allow more than just the build days when you are planning around it.
