Paint Hides Nothing
A fresh coat does not disguise a dented wall, a gap along the skirting or a filled hole that was never sanded back. If anything it does the opposite — new paint reflects light evenly, so every defect underneath it becomes more obvious than it was before.
That is why the bulk of the time on any decorating job goes in before the topcoat. Filling, sanding, caulking the gaps where timber meets plaster, priming bare and patched areas, and masking properly rather than trusting a steady hand.

Three Jobs That Are Not the Same Job
What is already on the wall decides what has to happen next.
Needs Sealing First
Fresh plaster is porous and drinks paint. It needs to be fully dry, then sealed with a thinned mist coat before full coats go on. Skip that and the emulsion sits on the surface and peels away in sheets later.
Needs Keying and Filling
Previously painted walls need washing down, filling and abrading so the new coat grips. Going straight over gloss or a chalky old emulsion is how a finish ends up flaking within a year.
Needs the Weather On Side
Outside work needs dry surfaces and reasonable temperatures for the coating to cure. We work to the forecast rather than the calendar, and will say if waiting a week gives you a better job.

Painting & Decorating FAQs
The questions we get asked most before decorating work starts.
How soon can new plaster be painted?
Not until it has dried right through — an even pale colour all over with no darker patches. On plasterboard that is often about a week; over a bonding coat, or in cold damp weather, longer. The first coat should then be a thinned mist coat so it soaks in. Painting too early is the single most common cause of emulsion peeling off months later.
Do we need to move furniture and empty the room?
No. We move what needs moving to the middle and cover it along with the floors. It helps if ornaments, small items and anything fragile are cleared away first, but you do not need to empty the room or take a day off to do it.
What time of year suits exterior work?
Spring through early autumn is best, since exterior coatings need dry surfaces and reasonable temperatures to cure properly. We book to the forecast rather than forcing a start date, and would rather move a job by a week than put good paint onto a damp wall.
Do you supply the paint?
Yes, included in the written quote, using trade products chosen for the surface and the room. If you have already settled on particular colours or a brand you like, we are happy to work with those instead — just let us know at the quote stage so it is priced correctly.
Can you decorate as part of a bigger renovation?
That is how most of it happens. Plastering, carpentry, kitchens, bathrooms and refurbishments all end in decorating, and having one firm carry the job through avoids the gap where everyone is waiting on somebody else to finish.
