The Finishing Trade

The Woodwork Is What People Actually Touch

Carpentry is the part of a renovation you interact with every day. Doors you open, handles you turn, drawers you pull, skirting the hoover runs along. It is also the part where a millimetre out is obvious — a door that catches on the frame or an architrave with a gappy mitre gets noticed long after the paint colour stops registering.

We cover both ends of the trade: first fix timber work before the plasterers arrive, and the second fix finishing that completes a room afterwards.

What We Take On

From a single sticking door through to the full second fix on a renovation.

01

Door Hanging

Internal and external doors trimmed, hung and adjusted, with hinges, handles and locks fitted so the door swings true and closes without a shove.

02

Second Fix Carpentry

Skirting boards, architraves, window boards and trims fitted and scribed to walls and floors that are rarely as straight as they look.

03

Bespoke Storage

Fitted wardrobes, alcove units, shelving and cupboards built to suit the space rather than forcing a flat-pack unit into a gap it does not fit.

04

Kitchen Carpentry

Units fitted and levelled, worktops prepared, end panels and plinths cut in, and doors and drawers adjusted so everything lines up.

05

First Fix & Framing

Studwork, floor and roof timbers, framing and structural preparation carried out before plastering starts.

06

Repairs & Alterations

Boxing in pipework, altering doors and plinths, easing sticking doors, replacing damaged trim and the small jobs other trades will not take on.

How Carpentry Splits

First Fix, Second Fix and Bespoke

Useful to know which stage you are actually asking about when you ring round for quotes.

First Fix

Before the Plasterer

Studwork, floor timbers, roof timbers, framing and door linings — the structural woodwork that gets covered up. Getting it square and plumb here is what makes the second fix straightforward later.

Second Fix

After the Plasterer

Doors, skirting, architraves, window boards, trims and handles. This is the visible work, done once the walls are finished, and it is where the room either looks finished or does not.

Bespoke

Made for the Space

Alcove units, fitted wardrobes and storage built to the actual dimensions of your room, including the awkward corners and sloping ceilings that off-the-shelf furniture ignores.

Old Houses, Wonky Walls

Nothing in a Real House Is Square

Skirting cut at a clean 45 degrees only works if the corner is actually 90. In most Essex housing it is not — walls bow, floors dip and door openings settle out of true over decades. Anyone who cuts to the theory and not to the room ends up filling gaps.

The answer is scribing rather than mitring where the wall demands it, packing linings so the door hangs plumb even when the opening is not, and cutting each length to the wall it is going on rather than to the one before it.

  • Corners scribed, not just mitred
  • Linings packed and plumbed
  • Even gaps around every door
  • Trim cut to the actual wall
  • Fixings set below the surface
  • Ready for the decorator

Small Jobs Welcome

The Jobs Nobody Wants to Turn Up For

Boxing in pipework, easing a door that has swollen, replacing a split architrave, altering plinths after a new floor went down, refitting a cupboard that never closed properly. Individually they are small, which is exactly why they are so hard to get a tradesman out for.

We take them on, and most customers end up bundling several together into one visit — which is cheaper for you and makes the trip worth making.

Common Questions

Carpentry & Joinery FAQs

The questions we get asked most about woodwork and finishing.

Can you match my existing skirting and architrave?

Usually. Common profiles like ogee, torus and chamfered are still readily available, so a repair or an extra room can be matched to what is already there. Older or unusual mouldings sometimes cannot be bought off the shelf, in which case the options are having it machined to match or changing the room over completely — we will tell you which is worth doing.

Why does my door stick every winter?

Timber moves with humidity, so a door fitted tight in a dry spell will bind when the damp weather arrives. Easing and rehanging usually sorts it, and sealing the top and bottom edges — the bits most people never paint — slows the moisture getting in. If the frame itself has dropped, that needs addressing rather than just planing the door.

Do you build fitted wardrobes and alcove units?

Yes. Alcoves either side of a chimney breast are almost never the same width as each other, which is exactly why bought furniture rarely fits properly. Built in place, the unit follows the room — including the skirting, the picture rail and any lean in the wall.

Do you supply the doors and timber?

Either way. We can supply everything as part of the quote, or fit doors and ironmongery you have chosen yourself. If you are buying, it is worth checking sizes carefully — older houses often have door openings that do not match modern standard sizes.

Will the woodwork be painted?

Carpentry is handed over with fixings sunk and ready for filling and decorating. We can carry out the painting as well if you want the room finished in one go — just say at the quote stage so it is priced in rather than added later.
