The Stage Before the Finish

Everything Later Depends on the Boarding

Plasterboarding is the stage nobody sees and everything else rests on. Boards fixed flat, joints landing on solid timber and openings kept square are what let the plasterer work quickly and what stop cracks appearing along the joints a year later.

We board walls and ceilings, dry line solid walls, build stud partitions and fit moisture-resistant board in wet areas — then hand it over ready for skimming, or tape and joint it ourselves.

What We Board

New rooms, extensions, conversions, repairs and everything in between.

01

Walls

Plasterboard fixed to studwork or dry lined onto solid walls, giving a flat, straight surface ready for the finish.

02

Ceilings

Ceilings boarded out, whether that is a new room, an overboard on a tired or textured ceiling, or making good after a leak.

03

Dot & Dab Dry Lining

Boards bonded directly to brick or block with adhesive dabs — quick, clean and effective on sound masonry walls.

04

Stud Walls

Timber studwork built and boarded to divide a room, close off an opening or create a new space within an existing one.

05

Specialist Boards

Moisture-resistant board in bathrooms and kitchens, plus acoustic and fire-rated board where the room calls for it.

06

Repairs

Damaged sections cut out and replaced, holes patched properly and joints re-taped rather than filled and hoped for.

Straight Walls Without Hacking Off

Dry lining solves a problem that plaster cannot: a solid wall that has gone out of true. Rather than building the whole thing back out with plaster, boards are bonded on with adhesive dabs and set to a line, so the finished wall is flat even when the brickwork behind it is not.

It is quicker and far less mess than hacking off and re-rendering. The one thing worth knowing is that it leaves a small void behind the board — so anything heavy going on that wall later needs fixings long enough to reach the masonry. Tell us where the TV or the radiator is going and we will put timber or extra dabs in behind it.

Board Types

The Right Board for the Room

Plasterboard is not all the same, and using the standard sheet everywhere is a false economy.

Moisture

Bathrooms & Kitchens

Moisture-resistant board in wet areas, behind tiling and anywhere humidity is a fact of life. Standard board in a shower room is one of the more expensive shortcuts you can take.

Acoustic

Bedrooms & Party Walls

Denser acoustic board, and insulation in the void, make a real difference on a stud wall between bedrooms or against a neighbour — far more than an extra layer of standard board would.

Fire

Where It Is Required

Fire-rated board where the building regulations call for it, including garage conversions and certain ceilings and partitions. We will flag it at the quote stage rather than after.

What Happens Next

Skim It, or Tape and Joint It

Boarded walls get finished one of two ways. A full skim coat gives a completely smooth surface across the whole wall and is the usual choice in a home. Tape and jointing finishes just the joints and screw heads, which is quicker and works well where tapered edge boards have been fitted neatly.

Both leave you ready to decorate. Which one suits depends on the boards, the room and what you want the finish to look like — we will talk it through rather than assume.

Common Questions

Plasterboarding FAQs

The questions we get asked most about boarding and dry lining.

Is it better to skim or tape and joint?

In a home, skimming is usually the better finish — a smooth surface right across the wall rather than just at the joints. Tape and jointing is quicker and works well on neatly fitted tapered edge boards, particularly on larger dry lining jobs. We will recommend based on the boards and the room rather than on what is fastest.

Can I hang a TV on a dot and dab wall?

Yes, but not into the board alone. Dry lining leaves a void behind it, so heavy items need fixings long enough to reach the masonry, or timber put in behind the board before it goes up. Tell us where the TV, radiators, cabinets or handrails are going and we will allow for it at the boarding stage.

Can you board over existing walls or ceilings?

Often, yes. Overboarding a tired or textured ceiling is usually cleaner and cheaper than pulling it down, and it avoids disturbing older textured coatings that may need testing before removal. It does lower the ceiling slightly, which matters more in some rooms than others.

Will a stud wall soundproof a room?

It will reduce sound, not eliminate it. Acoustic board plus insulation in the void makes a genuine difference and is worth doing between bedrooms. Anyone promising you silence from a stud wall is overselling it — real soundproofing needs decoupling and mass, which is a bigger job.

How long does boarding a room take?

An average room is often a day or so to board, depending on access, ceiling height and how much studwork is involved. Skimming or jointing comes after that, plus drying time before decorating. You will get a realistic sequence with your quote.
